Dear god, that's Huge! Hope there are no more fatalities and that they manage to get it under control. But looking at the extremes of it, thats going to take some doing   :kc020:

Indeed, the president of the Canaries, Fernando Clavijo, has just tried to "manage expectations" by saying in the last half hour that this will not be easy, particularly since the next couple of days' firefighting efforts coincide with the worst hot and windy weather for a long time ... and that people need to have patience and caution because that fire will get a lot worse before it gets better ...

When was the bad fire? Was it in '05 when there was huge damage to the Adeje and Tamaimo and Guia forest areas? They were well charred on one side, but re-grew the next spring or two. :03:

2007 ... was just before I started my website so I remember it well, as well as the sooty flakes that fell on our apartment. That was when I was a mod on TF, and we put Kirsty, Gordon and the children up because Chio was being evacuated. The fire got to within 50m or so of a petrol station near Santiago del Teide, which meant all hands to the pumps, literally! ... and Masca burned ...

And then there was THIS as well in 2012, when we ourselves had the car packed ready to leave because it was within 100m of our house and nothing in its way ...

Kingbaker

Yeah! Yeah!   I remember Masca burning alright. I can't believe that was nine years ago.
Do you remember 'Jackie'....she lived up there somewhere?

Janet

McCotter?? Irish girl? Can't think of another Jackie ... :undecided: (oh god if it's someone I should know and have forgotten ... :getmecoat:  :D )

Sadly, it seems that hopes to get the La Palma fire contained before today is out were optimistic. Canarian President Fernando Clavijo has sought to manage expectations by saying that the fire is fierce and spreading, and that weather conditions mean it is likely to get worse before it gets better. It seems that two further water planes have arrived from the southern mainland, and a second military emergency until is to join the firefighting efforts from Seville. Another long night seems in store for those fighting thsi fire, and la isla bonita will have a few more scars from which to recover before this is over. The latest is that the fire has already affected 5,000 acres and another residential area, El Charco in Fuencaliente, is being evacuated tonight. I hope that at least there won't be any more fatalities tonight.
