There have been a few of his advisors and friends lock up as well. His, or more correctly, their scam seemed to be a well oiled machine. Which is of course the norm for Spain. I am sure the templates for such schemes can be found in any Mayors office round the country. It would seem that greed was their downfall., isn't it always

The man himself seems bewildered, a bit thick! Even before this story broke I always thought him a tad dim when ever I saw him on the Tv. Which makes me think he was not the 'Brains' behind the operation. Time will tell and in 6 or 7 years when it finally gets to court most of the truth will out.....or not? :undecided:

And yes he will be crucified, hung drawn and quartered, if for nothing else but to save the monarchy.

Things are looking quite bleak not only for the Duke but the whole Royal Family. The accountant or aid to Urdangarin (the Duke de Palma) has buckled and is, I would think, looking for a deal to save his neck. It was reported that he initially refused to be questioned by the investigating judge. However last week it's reported he relented and spent eight hours before the judge.

During his questioning he allegedly implicated not only the Duke but the Dukes wife as being complicit in the affair. He went further to say the Royal family as a whole knew what was going on and named the King. He also named Urdangarin's lawyer who offered him cash to keep his mouth shut, didn't work! The accountant (sorry can't remember his name) went on to provide evidence in the form of 'conversations' It wasn't clear if these were recordings or notes made at the time. He stated he has letters and e-mails backing up his claims.

He also dragged one of the most corrupt ex Regional President in to the mire. The ex president of Valencia. A weasel faced man who shrugged off a number of corruption charged last year, but thankfully not all of them.

1,000's of people took to the streets over the corruption in Spain on the weekend, although it was not widely reported.

Sorry if there are any inaccuracies my main source is the wife and she doesn't always listen to the full reports :-[

He's fucked. Now if they could just concentrate on Rajoy and cronies.

Think it's Diego Torres.  :tiphat:

Urdangarin in Court in Palma this morning, second time of questioning, arrives to jeering crowd ....

QuoteInaki Urdangarin, 45, and his former business partner Diego Torres are suspected of siphoning off money given by regional governments to the non-profit Noos Institute to organise sporting events.

It is alleged that some of the money ended up in companies controlled by the duke and in offshore bank accounts.

... The duke, a former Olympic handball player, is married to King Juan Carlos's second child, Princess Cristina. He was suspended from official royal engagements in December last year.

Anti-corruption campaigners have urged the judge to formally name Princess Cristina as a suspect, alleging that she may also have been involved.

The Spanish monarchy has tried to distance itself from the scandal.

But emails published by Spanish newspapers last week appear to show that King Juan Carlos took a close interest in his son-in-law's business affairs.

Yes, but the ones in American newspapers make it even closer.
I think the emails to and from the King's girlfriend are causing particular interest (although curiously not so much in the Spanish "free press"  ..... yet, but they'll filter through slowly) and they are giving a different angle to the scandal.

QuoteThe search for new work for Mr. Urdangarin is telling of how the family operates in its rarefied world. The e-mails show that Ms. Sayn-Wittgenstein sought to make him president of a new Spanish branch of the Laureus sports foundation. Laureus, based in London, organizes a yearly international awards ceremony sponsored by luxury brands with top-flight athletes.

Corinna Sayn Wittgenstein is the King's bit on the side. She was brought into the mix as long ago as 2004 by the King.

In the end they bottled out of this one when they realised that the only possible reason for giving him the job would be for using his links to the King. And that probably all seemed a bit obvious ...... but wait a minute, that is why the King got Corinna to look for a job for wayward son in law in the first place .... because he knew exactly what he was doing and was going on and could see it was going to blow at some point ..........  this was in 2006, 7 years ago.

Of course they didn't actually disown him publicly and ban him from Sunday lunch until the press got it ... 7 years later..

Date line 7-5-13.  20,46hrs Arafo

Here in Arafo all hell broke lose this afternoon as Guanchies wife aka ' the voice' entered the house. Few words were spoken but those that were spat fire like a kalashnikov on steroids. This intrepid reported managed to glean that the King of Spains daughter has been spared from a court appearance in relation to the millions stolen by her husband. This was a step too far for 'the voice' who denounced the whole Spanish judiciary and the Royal family.

A hastily convened press conference was held in the kitchen where 'The voice' stated that the public prosecutor had appealed to three magistrates that the Kings daughter identified by 'The voice' as 'That XXXXXXX woman' aka Princess Christina had argued that she had no knowledge of the millions in her husbands bank account or where all the money was coming from. He also argued that because the 'XXXXXXX woman' was part of the Royal family she should receive a more 'sensitive' hearing.

The press conference descended into anarchy as tea bags were violently thrown into the tea pot. This brave reporter only managed to escape by running to the garage. As I descended the stairs I heard the words" And the XXXXXXX King said were all the same under the law!!"

Things have now calmed down but as there is a prospect of renewed protests when the news comes on the TV later. This reporter is staying in the safety of the space behind the sofa.

Stay tuned for further developments.

I love these rants!

Guanche mate, you may have missed your calling.  Here I thought all your tales of derring-do were so impressive.  Man of action.  Fearless.

Now I find there is a battle hardened reporter, unconcerned with his own safety.  Wow.

And a calculating but frightened man underneath and who wouldn't be faced with Mrs G?  It takes a big man to own up to being frightened of the  :gonnagetit:

If you find yourself in the west without a place to stay, stop by.  We'll harbour you while we rebuild your very deserved image.  You are a legend, and we'll make sure you stay one!
