Spanish Royally now coming in for some flak

I didn't see it myself, but there was a news item yesterday. It showed large queues flowing into Red Cross food banks around Spain and here in the Canaries. It then turned on the Queen of Spain shopping in London. Together with her entourage of family members, body guards, hair dresser and servant they were pictured doing a bit of shopping. The criticism wasn't about the shopping but the fact she had to go all the way to London to do it. Why she spends her money in the UK and not Spain.

The Royals have come under the spot light recently due to the alleged criminal activities of the Kings son in law and his wife. Millions of euros seem to have gone missing. There is an ongoing criminal investigation and it doesn't look good.

Yes, tactless indeed. It does seem the the son-in-law is in trouble, but the Royal family can't control people who marry into it, and involvement by the princess is either suppressed or just not there.

Agreed, I have the greatest respect for the Spanish Royal family and this incident seems to be out of character. They are normally quite good at keeping a low but loyal profile.

As for the son in law! hasn't he created a mess, and thats an understatement. But to look at him, well plonker springs to mind! As for his wife the princess it's difficult to imagine she had no hand in the activities. They were living a multi millionaire life style on pourers pockets, the three wise monkeys springs to mind.
Last year in the Kings speech he stated that 'No one was above the law' That was before the story blew up. It will be a test to see if his own daughter will be above the law. Whilst her husband is denying any wrong doing the evidence seems to be mounting up. I would suspect a deal will be made whereby he falls on his sword  and allows her to walk free. He will serve a short sentence and then they will be moved out of Spain.

Bail of €8,100,000 has been set for the King's son-in-law, the Duque de Palma, Iñaki Urdangarin, in the caso Nóos, and meanwhile, the Partido Popular in Majorca is seeking ways to strip him of his title of Duke of Palma ...

This is getting worse for the royals ...

How can a political party strip him of a title presumably awarded by the monarch?

Janet

(dis)honorary measure, I guess ..... or a political gesture!

Presumably he is Duke of Majorcan Palma, so they might have some rights there. It's a bit rich when politicians start objecting to irregularities in how others behave.

Ask "Mr" Fred Goodwin

I didn't know if it operated the same way as in the UK.

It seems they can't, but they have requested the king to take action. link
