Between 3 and 31 August, the Magma Centre will be home to the "Colinas en Magma" exhibition, an exposition of the work of Leon-born but Los Cristianos-resident artist Baltasar Pérez Colinas. Entry is free, and all proceeds from the sale of paintings will be donated to El Hierro residents who have been adversely affected by the recent volcanic process.

Favourite techniques employed in Baltasar Pérez Colinas' work include pencil, watercolor, oil and acrylic, and his paintings range through the traditional to Pop Art and Conceptual Art. Some 40 pieces will be exhibited, mostly large format paintings, but also 4 sculptures.

The exhibition has benefited from the collaboration of Magma Arte  & Congresos, Naviera Armas, La Opinión de Tenerife, Diario de Avisos, Cabildo de El Hierro, Terra Magma Inmuebles, Magazine Spend In, Soviten, Hotel Jardines Nivaria, Hotel Bahía del Duque, Centro Comercial El Duque and Hotel Sheraton La Caleta.

The exhibition, together with the MagMaCafe bar, will be open Monday to Thursday 12 midday to 6pm, Friday 12 midday to 12 midnight, and Saturday 6pm to 12 midnight. More info from the Magma site HERE.

I thought this would be a cool venue for a business meeting.

"Where shall we meet?"
"See you at the MagmaBar in the Magma conference centre at 5pm on Friday"

well I did check the publicity and the website . . . . states clearly that it starts on 3rd of August  . . . .  and clearly indicates that on Fridays it's open from Midday to midnight. Great

Well no . . . it doesn't say anywhere that it opens after the inauguration today at 8 pm.

5 pm closed in the calima . . . but you have to walk all the way around the building to be sure there isn't another entrance.

Embarrassing.

Janet

ah bugger, I'm sorry ... but at least you've seen for yourself that that's what all the publicity, and the Magma Centre's website, are saying.  :banghead:

Actually, as I was meeting a friend for a drink last night and went back at 10pm.
There weren't many people around by then but we had a great time with the artist, Mr Colinas ...... pissed as a fart, lamenting the fact that the President of the Cabildo of El Hierro (beneficiary) hadn't even bothered to acknowledge his invitation (Sorias didn't bother either but Rajoy sent a letter).
He seemed to think that there should be more on offer here than just "sol y playa" . . . . poor misguided soul . . .

The paintings were ok .... I particularly liked a red one, about two metres square, of a girl sunbathing on the beach, melting into the sand, with sand mixed in with the paint.

But what I thought really fantastic, was the exhibition space itself. Wonderful walls, interesting architecture, nooks and crannies ........ if that place were in a city, something really good could be done with it .... every month.

I doubt they will keep it open for the whole month ....... because we are in Tenerife South and the population isn't just smaller than people think, it is also culturally fractured. I don't think they'll get much attendance at all.        . Shame.

I always like it when people like Mr Colinas start splashing around on this island, making a noise and doing things, but he would find his energies more gratifyingly accepted in a city somewhere in Europe.

We've got sol y playa.

Thanks Prof. Is this an expat problem do you think, this lack of cultural awareness/appreciation? Or is it that there is simply not the resident population to warrant an exhibition like this?

El Profesor

I really don't think the British expat population is big enough to be that significant.
There just isn't a big enough population here - if you did the same thing in Madrid there are far far more people who are not at all interested and wouldn't go ....... however, that exhibition would be packed out.

millions live there - thousands live here.
