The Canarian Government's measure to abolish customs duty on items with a value under €150 has today been published as part of the budgetary measures in the BOE. As usual, measures come into force the day after their publication and so from tomorrow, 29 June, there will be no import tax on items under that amount.

OH HAPPY DAY!!!!!!

Wonder what that means for things which Amazon ships via UPS.

not a lot, I imagine ... I would think that UPS will remain the overcharging bastards they always have been ...

That's cool!!  Hopefully that means no more charge of €30 just to receive a €10 electronic item  :great:
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.

so to clarify, have people in the past been hit not just by customs duty but also by delivery charges?

Is that per item?  eg if you ordered 3 would you pay 90 euros in tax?

oh bollocks - now I shall have to import my Rolls Royce in 10,000 separate orders and assemble it myself.  :33:

Yes!  Though strictly speaking, they are not delivery charges but IGIC processing charges.  Correos charge the IGIC, which may only be cents, plus their fee of minimum €12 for their service of collecting the IGIC.

Other delivery companies, such as the infamous UPS, charge a lot more for handling the IGIC.

Usually I think the extra charge is only per package.  I learned a long time ago that large items usually get hit for IGIC but electronic items always get hit for IGIC.  Therefore a pair of slippers will likely reach you without extra charge, but order a bluetooth earpiece at the same time and you'll be charged IGIC on everything in the box, so both slippers and earpiece.  And then the IGIC collection charge on top.

UPS tried to justify its extortion by charging a 30€ clearing fee, taking it upon themselves to collect IGIC that none of the Canarian authorities even bothered with.  I remember the time they wanted that amount to clear a package of Oral B toothbrush heads worth about £6.  They were told to fuck off and go away. It got to the point that when UPS would phone from Madrid wanting the NIE of the recipient, they were told to send the shipment back to Amazon.

Like Nova's my experience is that if it is a large package, Correos will charge IGIC and the clearance fee, even if the IGIC amounts to under a euro.

I just don't see how UPS can continue to profit under the new scheme.  Thank goodness.
