Presa Canario ... treating the house as his own ...

Sometimes it's called a Dogo, though that's an Argentine name, I think. More commonly, and properly (I believe), it's called a Presa Canario ... a huge dog native to these islands which, some say, is the "canis" after which the "Canarias" were first named in Latin ...

It's also, according to an authoritative list I read once, the only dog whose attack a human would have "no chance" of withstanding.

We've been adopted ...

HE IS NOT STAYING ...

He's Mr Stutter's ...

we can have him if we want him ...

NOT ON YOUR BLOODY NELLY ...

but he's a very welcome visitor, and I don't mind at all getting to know a one-year-old full-of-beans happy-natured Presa while he's still young and adaptable enough to get to know us with happy connations ...

because he is going to be around, and loose, for a while ... until he too eats some poison, no doubt. Notably, Jacinto himself has just been given him, no doubt because this is the age at which registration and insurance (and fixed leads and muzzles) become compulsory for "perros potencialmente peligrosos" (potentially dangerous dogs). "Potentially"? Hahahahaha.

The idea that Jacinto will register and insure him (or leash or muzzle him) any more than the previous owner is laughable, but the dog is beautiful. Name's Toro, which means "bull" ... in a china shop, presumably. Brindle colouring. Pics in due course, I'm sure.

edit: HERE, coincidentally, is a report this morning in the papers about a Canarian "dogo" (read "presa") as the Spanish champion dog. He's brindle too ...

I notice a Guardia Civil car in the background of the photo. Perhaps they are there to fine them for having a PPP in public space without a muzzle. Or on a lead held by somebody who would have no chance of controlling the dog if it turned nasty.

Our fried the farmer has a few also .
They seem a friendly race but really bigg dogs .

Our friend keeps them out on the farm they have a few doghouses for them.
Think they really need space and not sueted as a house dog .

In my admittedly limited experience most Presa owners are very good with their dogs and take the time to train them properly.  We have a few in the neighbourhood and they are very well behaved.  There has been a Presa exhibition during our town's fiesta the past two years and people bring their dogs from all over the place.  They do chain them up but the dogs do not seem to get aggressive with each other.  I can tell you what would happen if you put a bunch of SBTs in a similar situation:  chaos.

I hope to meet your new dog one day soon.

I personally find it difficult to understand why anyone would want a dog that big for a pet. But I suppose there's a lot of things I don't understand :undecided: We have a family across the baranco from us, they have half a dozen Great Danes. They have them in a large kennel and we very rarely see them out of it. I just can't see the point.

We know someone near Las Chafiras who has half a dozen Irish Wolfhounds. Now they are big. They also have an Alsatian as a guard dog to stop people from stealing the Wolfhounds.

I remind you of this thread's opening post by quoting the following because it has a photo of a full grown Presa Canario. Toro, Mr Stutter's one, is now full grown ...

... and he just tried to shag me ...   :dog-135:

News article that a woman in Madrid has been killed by her Presa Canario.

The news item claims the presa canario is a cross between a now extinct Bardino Majorero (live pics here) and the English Mastiff.

Our neighbour with a stutter has one of these which he lets free and it often wanders into our garden. The neighbour claims the dog is scared of chicken, so that's ok.

A further report on the woman: it's not clear to me whether the photo shows where she lives or just the dogs. But the police are investigating whether she was breeding Pitbulls illegally. What I find interesting is the note at the bottom which states that the Presa Canario is not on the list of dogs listed as potentially dangerous but to me looks far more dangerous than any of them, and in this case obviously was.
