A great write-up in the Mail for Tenerife today ... unless you like "the neon bars of the south", and the company of the sort of people who, one can only presume, do actually read the paper this was written for .....

It's scathing about the south, unfortunately, but ecstatic about the north. The government will be pleased if they become aware of it. It's exactly the sort of thing they're trying to promote!

Wow!  As you say, exactly the kind of tourism the government is trying to promote, except that they would prefer these more cultural tourists to stay in the five-star hotels of Guía rather than the rural retreats to the north of the peak...  It's a shame the reviewer felt the need to reinforce the beer-and-chips stereotype of the south, but he gives a beautifully enamoured description of the north.  Plus, as you would expect from the Mail, stunning photographs!
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.

Well I guess on balance if it gets people to come here and spend money, it's a good thing.  Though I thought he skipped lightly over the business about putting on a fleece and then tripping down to the south to warm up.  People would be surprised to know how cold it gets here and the effort we go to to keep warm.  OH and I call going down to the coast to warm up "going to Tenerife on holiday".

I do agree about the photos; they are lovely.  And I am now hungry for papas con mojo.

He talked down Las Americas but I thought it was supposed to be more up market than Los Cristianos.  They seem to have more expensive shops at any rate.

There are two parts, really, to Las Américas. There's the Golden Mile area, with the posh shops and some nice hotels like the Villa Cortés and the Bitácora, but then there's the Veronicas area with dumps like the San Rafael complex, the Veronicas itself, and old and very horrible apartments like Barranco, Piramides ...

Very much a town of two halves.

Pretty good description of Tenerife I think.

It doesn't do itself any favours. I found this scenic area right in the middle of LA when killing time while Chandra was on dialysis. Within spitting distance of the golden mile. There are a few more of disused tennis courts etc. but they'd only depress you.

After years of turning my nose up at LA though, we're considering it for our next trip because the area around the golden mile is flat. Chandra struggles with hills these days bless her.

Parque Santiago 3 and 4 (and perhaps 5 too) are touristic, and right on the beach and in the heart of everything ...

:great:

HERE's Parque Santiago III, IV & V ...

You read my mind Janet. We're thinking of a 2 week package in 3 or 4. I'd prefer 3 but they don't give the choice so we might have to rough it in 4.  :giggle:

The general idea is that I can use our timeshare week myself some time. Poor Chandra just can't handle the hills around Torviscas.

Of course it all depends on the outcome of a visit to the oncology consultant on Tuesday.  :undecided:

Good article but the south is more than PDLA & Los Cristianos, at least, it is to me.
