Does anyone know the Atlantida restaurant in Las Galletas?  At the top of La Rambla behind the tourist information office.  Its terrace spills out onto the beach.  I have just been watching the last of its contents being carried away in a big truck, the windows have been removed, and I have been informed that by the end of this week, the Atlantida and the low white building next to it will be demolished.

The move will give me an uninterrupted view of the beach at that end from my balcony, but what a shame!  I have heard locals speak highly of that restaurant and have often seen the residents of the apartments above sunbathing on the roof terrace.  Within a week, the whole building will be just a memory.

They've been threatening that for a while, I think ...

at least you'll have an uninterrupted sea view!!

It has been on the cards a good while, yes, but I've heard various conflicting reports about it "not being knocked down after all" and the restaurant was still serving as recently as last Monday.

Were they built illegally?

:sign0144:

Actually, not new here, as I think I recognise the area from where we finish the April race.  But I am new to the topic.

Janet

No. Might be a-legal, but not illegal. Depends when it was built, but at best it was before planning regs became commonplace, or at worst, was built in defiance/ignorance of them. Since planning laws have been in place, though, such proximity to the coast has not been legal.

Nova

As I understand it, there was no regulation when the properties were built, so many were constructed so close to the sea that subsequent regulations to prevent building dangerously close to the sea has since deemed them illegal.  Cue the Ley de Costas, which set out to demolish properties within a set distance from the sea, a distance set by the mainland which is completely impractical here in Tenerife unless they force everybody to live up the volcano  ::)

Whilst looking for links I just found an amusing typo on Janet's website.  I think most people know the spot as "Punta del Viento"  :giggle:

QuoteTwenty houses are also to go in Puta del Viento, Las Galletas. They will be demolished over the next couple of weeks and replaced with a un paseo marítimo. The vast majority of owners have accepted, with just three still negotiating the expropriation with Costas

Ah, ninja'd by Janet  :yeah:
