Really looking forward to the turtle's photos tomorrow because they're always superb, but for the moment, here are a few I took which I hope convey something of the atmosphere. The food was good and reasonably priced, there was VERY LOUD music from a Canarian band interspersed with prerecorded oompah music, drink flowed freely, and not just a play area outside but a small fair! There was even the occasional sight of lederhosen ...

Perikles

Well, I've been to many beer festivals in my time, and this one was the very worst by a mile. It was hilarious for all the wrong reasons. The noise level was painful, unbearable, caused by base music from the fairground outside competing with the total shite from inside. Oktoberfest music is loud, but this was just insane. But the worst part of it was the music which had very little to do with Bavaria. Seeing that was recorded, there was no excuse for that, but I'm not going to listen to the Lara theme from Dr Zhivago at 500 decibels at an Oktoberfest without realizing that the Canarians could not organize a kiss in a brothel.

Their attempt at live music was the bog standard Canarian band which consisted of drums, drums, trumpet and drums which is fine for a festival of some local bloody virgen, but has nothing to do with the name of the event.

The venue had potential, but I've never been to a Bierfest before where you could drive a lorry between the tables.

Sausages were good.

To be fair, by the time we left (can't remember when, around 9 or so, I think) the Canarian band had gone and they were setting something up on the stage, clearly for live music. It seemed to be a couple of keyboards at right angles and maybe a stool thing, so apparently setting up for an adept single performer or a close duet, possibly a trio ... hopefully that would have been Bavarian in flavour, but we had to leave because we had a Rosie ...

It seems to me that to be financially viable a ten day festival in a place as small as south Tenerife actually requires people to go more than once. I would have gone back just to see what the later live music was but there is no bloody way on earth that I will go back to that tent after that noise. I (and Perikles) might be unique, of course, but that's two potential returners they've lost.

And with the prerecorded stuff ... what was with the run-through of every hit of Village People? Not even German, let alone Bavarian!

You most certainly are not unique. Excessive volume in a social situation is the first thing that will drive me away. To the extent that me and SWMBO baled half way through our son's wedding reception. After the meal we retired to a lounge for dancing and drinkies and there was a folk music band. I swear, I saw Led Zeppelin in 1970 and they weren't that bloody loud.  :gonnagetit:

CANARIAN VS BAVARIAN - PART 1

My take on Oktoberfest in sunny Tenerife is that it was a complete scream.  You have to admire the beauty of the Canarian beer balloon which greeted us at the start of a Bavarian beer festival.

That turned out to be a subtle bit of advice:  the Warsteiner, normally a very good beer, priced at 2.99€ for half a litre was not as good as the Dorada, conveniently priced at 1.99€.  Score one for the Canaries!

If you don't believe me, here's Perikles who is clearly happy to have a few Doradas lined up.

Just like in Munich, there was table service provided by buxom - brunettes!  Well, it's the Canaries after all.  I'll leave it to Perikles to critique their performance.  We left our waitress a good tip, which she absolutely deserved as she worked for it.

What would Oktoberfest be without lederhosen and giant beer bellies?  Not half as much fun.

Truly impressive, and score one to the Bavarians!

And then, the Fanfarría Los Silos arrived to rapturous applause.  You simply cannot imagine how loud they were.  They played many popular favourites as they marched around and around the beer tent.  In fact my recollection is that they were the ones who did "YMCA" and "In the Navy" but I could be wrong.  But then again, I was consuming Dorada to my heart's content.  We did all the arm movements to "YMCA" and could not stop laughing while Perikles looked on in horror.  Here's the band.

Now, as the restrictions on attachments seem to be 600kb max per post, this concludes Part 1 and Part 2 will be along shortly.
