National Police are investigating the discovery of two bodies in a house in El Sobradillo in Santa Cruz yesterday. Locals called in the police around 7pm last evening because of an unpleasant odour, and initial emergency service reports suggested that the bodies had been burnt. Later, however, official sources indicated that the smell had arisen from the advanced state of decomposition that the bodies were in. No doubt it will become clear in due course, and all police are confirming at this stage is that the bodies are unidentified. JA

The couple died after a spark set their mattress on fire and they were overcome by fumes as they tried to shield themselves from the blaze at the back of the house. These are the findings of the autopsy carried out on the tragic pair, and confirm the police's initial suspicions. The autopsy report has now been sent to the Juzgado de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. JA
