Authorities advise public that “approaching hurricane Ophelia” is a scaremongering hoax

We might see a calima over the next few days but the big weather news is tropical storm Ophelia which is currently strengthening to the west of the Canaries. One reason it's big news for us here in these islands is that it is expected to become a hurricane towards the end of the week, but the real big news is that the only actual blowing involved is the out of context sensationalist reporting because Ophelia is already considerably west of these islands and after moving northeast, is heading, as such systems nearly always do, westwards across the Atlantic to become the tenth hurricane of the season approaching the Americas. As such, apart from a bit of unsettled weather and a fair bit of cloud, it is not expected to have any effect on the Canaries at all. Both meteorological and political authorities have warned the public that they should not believe what they call hoax news and scaremongering. The graphic below (click to enlarge) shows the system and its current location.

Tropical Storm Ophelia could convert into a hurricane today or tomorrow and is currently travelling northeast on a course between the Azores and Madeira where it could turn west to head across the Atlantic or fizzle out into blustery conditions for the mainland. Ophelia already has an "eye", and its maximum sustained winds are almost 110km/h with gusts far higher, and a minimum central pressure estimated at 992mb. I pass this on from meteorologists so that people have accurate information, and be reassured that they insist there is absolutely no threat to the Canaries, nor any cause for concern in these islands, where they say the most we can expect as a result of the system's passing is some cloud and possibly breezy conditions.

Don't think this side of the Atlantic we'll ever get hurricanes "I've been told", Gusts and strong winds but nothing like America.

edit: ah no, you mean UK ... that was 1987. It woke me up about 4am, though I didn't know it was the storm that did it, and I went downstairs, bathroom, cup of tea, look out of the living room window, saw the oak tree opposite bent double and thought ah no, I'm not really up or awake, I'm just dreaming ... and went back to bed. Following morning most of my part of Surrey was devastated ...

Wasn't it the summer of 1987 that there were horrific storms and gales?  We were in a frame tent in Abersoch and my dad sat up all night holding onto the frame....

Oh yes the one that Fish geezer got wrong  I was on about Tenerife actually - even Delta which I was on Compostela Golf at the time was a tropical storm not a hurricane.

I was the same time as George Best died remember it on the news, whilst watching the sunbeds being blown around the pool area it was really scary. We went down to hide in the Patch and when we came home LA was desserted !!

My mum has corrected me.  We were in the tent in Abersoch during the August 1989 tornado that destroyed the Butlin's at Pwhelli 

So although I remember all the "Michael Fish got it wrong" stuff from the time of the 1987 hurricane, I don't actually remember the hurricane itself.
