Loro Parque has been there or thereabouts plenty of times, and has previously been named the best zoo in Europe, but it's its sister venue, Siam Park, that has been voted "the best in the world" for the last four years consecutively. This year, though, Loro Parque has achieved the distinction itself, being voted best zoo in the world by visitors who voted on the TripAdvisor website.

Loro Parque expressed delight at the Travellers' Choice award, and said that the distinction acknowledged its work in education, conservation and raising awareness about protection of the animal world and its ecosystems. "Being named the Number One zoo in the world is a true recognition of our animal welfare work", the park says, and is "a landmark joining other recent recognitions, like the American Humane certification, or the certificate of the independent auditor Global Spirit, which recognizes the achievement of 100% of the animal welfare standards requirements set by ABTA".

The park added that its work, and its recognition by visitors as the best animal welfare park in the world, within the role of the modern zoo in society, can only be be understood within the context of its science and conservation program, which has operated since 1994 through the Loro Parque Foundation. This has been responsible for some €17m invested directly in conservation programmes both at the park and in the wild, and the salvation of several species, particularly avian, from the brink of extinction.

All the times we've been to Tenerife and that's not somewhere we've visited.  Now we don't bother hiring a car and just get Titsa's everywhere it might take a bit of planning from Playa De San Juan but I'll be sure to add it to the itinerary for next year.
