The Tenerife Cabildo has announced that it is setting up 39 free wifi points in the four main tourist municipalities of Adeje, Arona, Santiago del Teide and Puerto de la Cruz as a pilot project that could be extended throughout the island in the future. The project, carried out in collaboration with the Ayuntamientos concerned, is costing some €35,000 and was presented today by Tenerife President Carlos Alonso with "Tenerife 2030" councillor Antonio García Marichal and Turismo de Tenerife chief Alberto Bernabé.

The network will have a minimum download speed of 10 megabytes and serve over half a million in the four areas, mainly tourists, who just need to register with some basic details about their nationality and their accommodation. President Alonso said that improved connectivity was a significant requirement for tourists, both because they are seeking information about Tenerife and because they are increasingly continuing to work remotely while on holiday. Ultimately, the president said, the idea was to provide the whole island with wifi connection.

Bernabé said that the majority of tourists to Tenerife use the internet while on holiday, and so this new service will give added value to their chosen destination. The four areas were chosen because together they house some 88% of tourists, who not only used the internet to work while away but also to keep up with emails, social media, etc. Search engine data, moreover, would be able to show which aspects of the island were the subject of most searches for information, thus enabling the authorities to improve the island's touristic offer.

The works will start this month and should be rolled out over the course of the coming year. The pilot project free wifi points will be located as follows:

Puerto de la Cruz – Lago Martiánez, jardín de aclimatación de la Orotava, Plaza del Charco, puerto pesquero, Castillo de San Felipe, Playa Jardín, Plaza de los Reyes Católicos and la Avenida de Colón.

Arona – the ayuntamiento, Puerto de Los Cristianos, Mirador de la Centinela, Paseo Litoral de Las Galletas, Parque de Garañaña, Paseo de Costa del Silencio, and various beaches where the council has concessions.

Santiago del Teide – the Ayuntamiento, Acantilado de los Gigantes, and various beaches where the council has concessions.

Adeje – the Ayuntamiento, la caseta de entrada al Barranco del Infierno, la caseta de Turismo de Playa Fañabé, la caseta de Turismo de Playa Troya, and various beaches where the council has concessions.

The project is part of Tenerife 2030, the investment strategy to create the infrastructure and opportunities for the future.
