Not much else to do when it's so hot, other than trawl newspapers for something sane. It took some time, but I found an article which was sane, but so boring it became interesting.

Subject: How to work out what the alphabetic character is which makes up the last character of your NIE

Explained here

If your NIE starts with an X, ignore it. Divide the NIE number by 23 and find the remainder. Use the table in the link to find which character corresponds to that remainder. Taraaaaaaaaaaaah. Mine worked, so I can sleep peacefully.

So next time some idiot demands to see your NIE, omit the last letter go  :P and tell them to work it out. See what reaction you get.

Perikles

... and of course, you have to explain to some people what a remainder is.

NAH

Amazing, it works on both of ours as well  :thanx:

I'm not sure why you'd ever need to work it out though  :017:

:Woot_Emoticon: I suppose it could be useful to check that somebody is not giving you a false DNI or NIE. You would have a 22 in 23 chance of detecting it.  :great: I bet official bodies have some way of checking easily.

That's cool!!  I always knew there was a formula to it and that the last letter acts as a kind of "check digit", but I never knew what that formula was, nor had the inclination to sit and work it out  :D

In the bank the system threw an error if a DNI/NIE was incorrect, even for non-clients who weren't on the database, so I knew the computer was doing some calculation to validate it.
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.

Christ, I was going to be totally flippant upon reading the opening post and say that it is just a check digit!

I cannot make the formula work for me.  And what about people whose NIEs end in S?

I cannot even make the example, 12345678/23 work.

Is it cuz I is wine?

Janet

 mine ends with S and it works for me ... but I is wine too ... :undecided:

I think you should re-read this after the wine has worn off. The example works perfectly, if sober  :D

If the remainder after calculation is 15 the last letter would be 'S' according to the table which Perikles linked in his post.
