Please be careful if out walking, or taking any other strenuous exercise in these days of calima, or indeed through the rest of the summer. A 61-year-old German walker died in Gran Canaria this afternoon after she suffered a cardiac arrest in La Culata, Tejeda, just before 4pm, the hottest part of the day, even though 4pm to most of us suggests a safe afternoon time.

We're about two hours out here, given that Spain chose to align its time with Nazi Germany during WWII. We should be an hour behind Spain, but Spain should itself be a couple of hours behind the main part of Europe ... meaning that the Canaries should be a couple of hours behind GMT/BST ... but we aren't. Our time is the same as the UK's but it shouldn't be.

The hottest part of our day here is between 2pm and 6pm (midday and 4pm in any sane time system). Please be careful, and see HERE too on how to stay safe in heatwaves.

A few years ago a calima got me.

I drove to Hospiten Sur at  23.30 with difficulty breathing while lying down. It turned out that I had a (fully) blocked artery, high blood pressure, swollen ankles, high cholesterol, high glucose test, high heart rate and a lung filling up with fluid.....just flippin' wonderful.

A week or so in coronary care, 27 pills a day to take, and I got a list the length of my arm of things NOT TO DO.

Air ambulance home.

My insurance paid in full.........approx €10,000 in total.

So heed this warning and mind yourselves!! :tiphat:

Kingy thank goodness you survived and are still with us.

Though I worry about your blood pressure and interest in PJs.   ;) ;) ;)

You all take care out there. Don't want anyone ending up in hospital. Too far to come visiting, and the flowers would wilt before i got there   :kissbloom:

This might be about to change ... Spain is seriously considering reverting back to GMT ...

whether this will mean the Canaries will be pushed back an hour too I don't know. This national measure is thought likely to happen, so either the Canaries will end up on the same time as the mainland, or we'll end up being an hour behind GMT (which is actually where we should be).
