A big warm hug to all Brits from Tenerife

I think it's important to distinguish between rip-off merchants - of which there are loads, particularly in the coastal areas - and "resident discount". The discount on travel, for example, is an EU-funded scheme whereby any outlying region, of any country in the EU, gets subsidised travel for when they need to go to the mainland. This is true for the Canaries with Spain, but also applies to outlying regions of France and Portugal (link).

Then there's the "resident discount" on entry prices, bar and cafe tariffs, etc. This is not an official policy, but is intended by businesses to encourage locals to use them - or simply to make them accessible to locals in the first place. It benefits the locals, and the businesses. And the reason it's necessary is because the average wage here is €12,000 p.a. That's about 10,000 Pounds. The latest I heard was that the average UK salary was 26,500 Pounds. That's over 200% income. The resident discount is normally about 10%, occasionally 50%.

How does a resident find out who offers us a discount and how much it is?

It's not really about being a resident, more about using the same places regularly, and don't ask the price if tourists are in earshot. If going to a new place ask quietly.

See, that's what I can't be bothered with.  I'd rather stick to places I know, that have one tariff for everybody and don't try it on.  But then it's years since I had so much as a coffee in a tourist area anyway.
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.

To be honest I can't think of one bar in Los Cris that has one tariff (and I used a lot of bars). Also applies to the real rip off electronic shops (they start off much lower)
Doesn't seem to apply to Restaurants, although you do tend to get more freebie after meal liqueurs.

Talking about tourist areas. A place in your "Residential" town, has one of the most expensive drink prices I have seen. It's the "Tourist" one on the beach.

You gotta watch those freebie liquors a lot of places serve the much cheaper sin alcohol versions !   That's when they don't bring the bottle to the table !!
