No it wont be the opposite . This article only talks about the superritch Russians (that mostly already got their money out of Russia) . . .  The vast majorety has lost buyingpower to buy outside Russia . The value of property has gone down a lot also in Russia . And with the price of comodetys like oil and gas gone less than half its going to be a different market . . . . .

Agreed. The Russian middle class has been eliminated. That affects us.

Janet

The middle class everywhere has been eliminated, or is in the process of being so.

so a one-third drop in the fourth-biggest market ... not exactly devastating for us, albeit uncomfortable.

Actually that 35% refers to all foreign travel, I think here it is more like 60%. And that isn't taking into acount the hidden economy of the residents and property owners.

Russia is still only our fourth market, and it was struggling anyway to maintain that with increases in other markets Turismo's been targeting. I get that a positive view is generally unpopular though ... I've seen it on my own site as well, I have no idea why.

I think it's because I know a few Russians who are more exposed than the rest of us.
The worst cases are the ones that have residency here; if they go back to Russia they have to hand over their documents and they get put in a special tax bracket (for having a foreign residency).

But I think it'd be hard to exaggerate how much the Russian money has eased the recession here over the last few years - I don't mean just hotel tourists, I mean the people living here.
