Canarian president Paulino Rivero will not be president after 2015′s elections, that much is already clear after he withdrew from the race to represent his party, Coalición Canaria (CC), as presidential candidate following a defeat in the first round of party voting. Paulino Rivero was defeated by 45 votes to 40 by the mayor of La Laguna and general secretary of the CC, Fernando Clavijo. Blaming a clique in his own party, Paulino Rivero said he would continue to work in the Canarian Government "to the last second". JA

This could actually be an interesting election for president because José Miguel Pérez. the socialist PSOE candidate and current vice president of the Canaries, has also announced he's stepping down after this tenure. It's a whole new generation. The PSOE haven't chosen their candidate yet, but there's only one name in the hat so far ... Gustavo Matos, the Canarian government's director general de Comercio y Consumo. At least it will be a decorative campaign ...

Clavijo left, Matos right ...

Matos.  Oh just wow.  I wonder if he would be interested in my views, which I would love to share with him.

Hey, you stay out of it.  I will let you know if there is a meeting of the minds.

meanwhile, I'm quite enjoying this, Rivero is so utterly pissed off that he's been deselected, he's announcing all sorts of ridiculous and controversial policy ideas in the name of the CC, without any sort of party backing, and without even telling them in advance of announcements. They, and particularly Clavijo, are furious, accusing him of deliberately sabotaging the CC's chances in the election.

Well, I can't stand Rivero, but I mean, well, wouldn't you ... ??
