Over €6 million to improve water system

As part of a joint Adeje and Arona project with the Tenerife Cabildo, over €6.5m has been invested in the desalination and purification plant in Playa de las Américas next to the main police station. This will significantly increase the amount of water processed daily. According to Adeje's environment councillor Gonzalo Delgado Díaz, at present "81% of the water consumed in Adeje is desalinated". The improvements are part of plans "to reach 91 % of the population within a year with the improvement works that are being undertaken and an upgrade to the drinking water network financed by Adeje council".

The councillor explained that the Adeje-Arona desalination plant supplies Adeje with around 5m cubic metres of water per year, and alongside the 3m cubic metres produced by the plant in La Caleta, gives the 81% coverage mentioned. Tests show, moreover, that Adeje has the best quality water in the island.

In the last year, desalinated water production has increased to a daily average of 22,991 cubic metres, a significant increase on previous 12 months. The Playa de las Américas plant has been in operation since 1998 and has a current daily capacity of 30,000 cubic metres. It serves Adeje and Arona, mainly in the tourist zones and along the coast.

Tenerife Cabildo president Carlos Alonso and the minister for water Jesús Morales were present at the press conference to unveil the improvements, and they confirmed that further investments are also planned for the Parque de la Reina pumping station which will facilitate water conduction up to Llano del Camello and Las Chafiras, as well as the coastal areas of San Miguel de Abona.
