A plane has *not* crashed off Gran Canaria

Much ridicule has accompanied this afternoon's mistaken identification by the Canarian Emergency Services of a "crane boat" for a downed Boeing 737 in waters off Gran Canaria. The mistake was rectified almost immediately, with confirmation in minutes, but that has not stopped Spanish and British press and public alike accusing 112 of everything from needing to go to Specsavers to being drunk on duty.

Above are photos showing what the scene looked like at first glance, then one of a close-up that the initial fly-by did not have available. One could say that at least they reacted instantly, and given two fatal bus crashes in the last two weeks on Gran Canaria, and a downed helicopter from a Gran Canaria base with the loss of four out of five lives on board, perhaps jitters are understandable. Mercifully, at least, there is nothing more than a bit of bruised pride to report. JA

Isn't incredible how that rag manages to squeeze a story out of nothing by relating it to something it reminds you of, something utterly irrelevant to the non-item? Any chance to remind you of a disaster. That wasn't a plane crash, but this one is.

So after the fear, then the relief, now the smiles ...

Reading speech bubbles L-R, bearing in mind that the person with the binoculars and 1-1-2 on his T-shirt is an emergency services bod ...

Bloody hell,* so it ISN'T a plane! Hurry up, deactivate the alarm! And what do you call it?
Reply from off stage: Binoculars ...

+Coño: anything from, "hey mate" to "fucking hell" or worse, remember the posts saying that in English it's the C-word but here even children say it routinely ...

the 112 chap can't identify a plane from a crane boat, and someone off stage is telling him what binoculars are ... because they obviously didn't use them to see what was floating just a short way off the coast!

It seems that a plane has crashed after all. They have sighted two people who need rescuing.
