Adolfo Suarez died over the weekend, the first elected prime minister of the democracy after the end of the Franco dictatorship in 1975. I was interviewed earlier for Radio Sur Adeje, and if anyone is interested in who he was, and his importance, you can have a listen HERE. Just click, then download, and then go forward to 9  minutes.

Everyone seems to speak very fondly of him.

Am I alone in thinking of him as a suave manipulator who stitched up the people of Spain so well that they are only now beginning to realize?

Let's hope they are ready for another "transition" soon or this country (modern?) is going right down the drain.

It's all relative - would you have preferred Franco?

Well........ the first thing I said to the wife was 'So he's the one who we have to thank' I got a very short reply! I think there is a lot of nostalgia associated with this chap. But in a way I can understand that. This chap was the first in a brave new world for Spain. He represented everything for everyone and in that brilliant light its hard to see the truth. Of course time forgives a great deal.

I wish I had known about him.  I think maybe I should take my hat off to him.
