Two traffic accidents in Arona, one fatal

Christmas campaigns notwithstanding, take care on the roads out there over the holiday period. In the last 12 hours alone there have been two traffic accidents in Arona. One, a 21-year-old woman was lucky to escape with minor injuries last night after her car overturned around 3am in Avda. Amsterdam, Los Cristianos, Arona. The other, a 70-year-old man, however, was sadly killed when he was knocked down on the main TF657 in Cabo Blanco at 11pm. Despite paramedics' best efforts he was declared dead at the scene.  Police say that they have arrested two Los Abrigos men of 27 and 28 years of age who were driving a Renault Kangoo when they knocked down the poor man in Cabo Blanco, and who drove off without stopping to help or report the accident. The hit and run will now result in them being charged with reckless driving and homicide. The victim has been identified as Gregorio Martín Rancel, a resident of Buzanada known popularly as "Vargas". He had worked before retiring for the council and was very involved in Buzanada sports club. Sadly, he had been in Cabo Blanco visiting a niece who had herself been a victim of a traffic accident. JA
