The government has issued an alert, and Aemet has set an orange alert, for high winds in the western islands and Gran Canaria from tonight. There is also a yellow alert for wild seas. North-easterly winds gusting to 90km/h are forecast, and are expected to be strongest at altitude, particularly in the north west and south east. At present the alert lasts from midnight tonight until midnight tomorrow. JA

As forecast, it is the north west and south east of the island that are being worst affected, though the north generally is very windy, with the San Bartolomé de Tejina primary school in La Laguna losing its roof overnight. Part of the school has been closed, but the infants classes continue. As usual with the southeast – southwest divide, reports confirm that it is very windy from the Golf del Sur up the east coast, but sheltered and very much less affected on the west coast from Palm Mar up to Los Gigantes. At altitude, however, the winds are very strong. There are no reports of any transport affected apart from the usual closure of the TF-24 (La Esperanza) and TF-21 (La Orotava) access roads to Teide because of ice on the carriageway, and one cancellation of the small ferry between Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

. . . . . . . .  very windy, with the San Bartolomé de Tejina primary school in La Laguna losing its roof overnight. Part of the school has been closed,  . . . . . . .
.
More likely a consequence of the lack of building regulations than of the weather.   :ouch:

maybe so but it takes the wind to lift it ... and meanwhile a Los Gigantes hotel has had its windows blown in ...

edit: The forecast for wild seas and strong winds has now been extended throughout the weekend and strengthened slightly, with winds gusting to 100km/h predicted.

Same problem in the Las Galettas school .

My son came home and they had to stay in the class for the recreo as the roof of playground came loose and firedepartment was bussy with  (securing/removing ? ) It .

A big thank you to Janet and everyone for keeping this thread up to date! :kissing2: Why you may ask? Well this morning the wife and I spent over an hour cleaning up all the broken orniments from the garden and generally tidying up! Why? because for some reason I didn't read the thread!!! :021: and didn't batten down the hatches last night as I would normally do after getting the heads up on bad weather.

So read the weather thread!!! :great:

Everybody I know has been complaining about how terribly cold this winter has been.  Have a look at this animation in the DM and see if you agree with me, that I think it shows we are getting the polar vortex shoved at us.

Its the wind chill. I have been checking the temp all week and its only gone down to 17deg. Yesterday it was 21deg in the shade but its been bloody freezing!
Right now its 19deg in the shade bright with patchy cloud and strong gusting winds with intermittent drizzle. White horses out at sea.
