Here's that other photo, again from NASA, of a dust storm from Africa, but this time a scirocco, and so instead of coming from due east, coming instead from further south and swirling out and around so as to approach the Canaries from the south or west.

The Canarian Government's Dirección General de Seguridad y Emergencias has this evening issued an alert for maximum temperatures from 8am tomorrow. The alert is for temperatures of up to 40º in many parts of the Canaries, exceeding that in some areas. At present, the alert is open-ended, and it is likely that mountain area fire bans will follow from the Cabildo.

Just looked on the webcam for los cristianos and it looks very grey.

It's grey with a pink-orange tint due to all the muck...

I think this might be the worst calima I've ever seen.  The sky is thick dull grey and the air feels like you could cut through itt.  The sun came up over the buildings while I was in the pool but you could hardly make it out.  It was just a glow from behind the grey sky.
