Last night, or I should say about 4am this morning we had heavy rain leading to hail stones and the longest sheet lightning storm I've ever seen. It must have gone on for 30 to 45 min. I was like a faulty fluorescent light bulb, always on but with peaks of bright light. We must have had a direct hit as the power went off in our house. The result was the adapter for the router has broken. It was turned off but still plugged in. What I cant understand is that a mobile house phone and the micro wave are plugged in to the same sockets and there OK? Luckily I have a spare adapter. Everything else plugged in seems to be ok as well. This morning outside was 10deg and intermittent heavy rain. Cloud cover half way down the mountain, Sea looks fairly flat.

Same thing happened here some years ago. There was a flash of lightning, and also a flash from this adapter. Nothing else was damaged. I managed to rig up another adapter, and even used a 12 volt car battery, which worked perfectly well. At the time, we were having intermittent problems with the internet, until I finally called in a Telefonica technician. He gave me a bollocking for using something other than their own adapter for the router, pointing out that the router was Telefonica equipment, so I should not mess with it. I didn't know that, I should have just acted dumb and called them in when the adapter blew up. Anyway, he changed our router, which transformed the internet into something far more reliable. It transpired that the old router was the internet problem all the time.

Well the snow came alright! And it came, at least in the form of sleet and hail, right down on the coast. Unprecedented pictures, like the one below of snow at Guaza roundabout, accompanied those of a complete white-out at altitude. Those planning a trip up to Teide to see the deep snow need to know that access roads are closed because of ice, and conditions up there are so challenging that the search for missing athlete Victor Teni has been suspended today: there's a complete white-out and temperatures down to -5ºC.  Down on the coast the hail has been replaced by persistent rain and low temperatures. At 1km altitude we have 9º – and not a sign of the snow I'd quite like to get a five-minute glimpse of! JA

LA OROTAVA: 24.5mm
VILLA DE ARICO: 24.8mm
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE: 28.6mm
LOS ANDENES-TACO: 34.6mm
AGULO: 31.4mm
CANDELARIA: 36.6mm

and here's the white-out this afternoon in the Teide crater, and why the search for Victor Teni has been called off. Apart from the clear danger to search teams, it's just impossible to see anything up there anyway.

I was not awakened by the thunder and lightening in the middle of the night.  It was my dog, who was terrified of said thunder and lightening.

Here we have managed a measly 10.5 degrees outside with 12.9mm rain to date.

Don't think we've had any hail or snow.

Edit 14 minutes later:  The sun's out!!!!!  Temperature has shot up to 11.4.

Edit a few minutes later:  And it is bucketing, but the sun is still out.

No rainbow.  You know, your teeth are starting to haunt me.

What a difference a day makes. Clear blue skies warm breeze 19deg in the shade, sea like a pancake!

Driving to Puerto Cruz yesterday was like visiting a different Island.  Fog and cold rain.
