Today I managed to learn something I've been wondering about when reading the weather forecast.  The wind direction as indicated by the arrows confused me.  See example below.

The lines at the non-arrow end are called barbs, and here's a link to an article on how to read/interpret them.

:link:

Looks like 'part 3' of 'method 1' has an incorrect symbol for 10 knot winds.  It shows the symbol for 15 knots, rather than a single long barb angled off the end (as described/shown in part 2)  :017:

Then how's somebody like me supposed to figure it out?!?!

The forecasted rain and wind did not materialise but the waves are HUGE!  Bigger than I've ever seen.  I think high tide is in about 7 minutes and I am going to take a walk down to see if I can get any good pictures.

It is also warm, warm enough to have had breakfast outside.

Don't get too close hun

Lots of rain and wind at altitude. Gusts of 135 km/h recorded near the observatory at IzaƱa, and lots of water ... this is being celebrated near Vilaflor, whose barranco is running like this ...

Meanwhile, for once, all schools closed throughout the entire archipelago because of winds and rain forecast, and we remain on Canarian Government alert for high winds and costeros. Since school closures are one of the biggest hoaxes played here, it took some convincing people that they really were closed this time!

Really, though, given the forecast, we got off rather lightly. Emergency services say that they dealt with over 100 calls last night, but that was over all the western islands and Gran Canaria, and none involved anything more serious than flooded roads (eg the El Fraile to Las Galletas road was inundated again) or fallen branches or street lights.

I love waterfalls!

Waves breaking near Crab Island, near Los Gigantes.

I was less than 50m from the rocky outcrop.
