Well after a few days of blue skies the clouds have arrived this morning. Rain maybe?

Janet

they're saying there's a possibility, though as always it's mainly in the north that it's likely. Always happens after the alisios return and push the calima back to Africa.  ::)

After a week of much cooler weather, another heatwave is approaching which will affect the islands from Thursday. Once again, Gran Canaria will face the brunt of it, with Sanidad putting southern municipalities on red alert under the Plan de Actuaciones Preventivas de los Efectos del Exceso de Temperaturas sobre la Salud. This preventative action plan introduces measures to counter the effects of extreme heat, and specifies and coordinates regional, insular and local government measures where public health is at risk.

This is Gran Canaria, of course, but Tenerife is never all that far behind. Importantly, it is not the same as a red alert from the Met Office, which is forecasting temperatures for us of around 35º, especially in the medianías, with yet another calima spoiling the air quality, particularly in the west, south and east of the island. Aemet has raised a yellow alert in its own right from south Gran Canaria and there's little doubt that this will be extended to Tenerife in due course. This new spell could be a protracted one with temperatures rising even further next week, and Sanidad issues red alerts when conditions are expected to last five days or more.

Sounds a right pain in the medianias again!

Janet

As anticipated, Aemet's yellow alert for high temperatures in Gran Canaria from tomorrow has now been extended to Tenerife, where 34º is forecast for west, south and east Tenerife between 10am and 8pm, especially in the medianías, and the same for Friday but for the whole of Tenerife.

Marion

Those medianias give some trouble! Glad I had mine removed!

Janet

The Canarian Government has issued an alert for high temperatures throughout the Canaries. The alert comes from the Dirección General de Seguridad y Emergencias, and is in force from 8am tomorrow morning based on weather advice from Aemet. As an alert it applies the "adverse weather phenomenon" protocol to allow for coordination at regional, not just insular, level. Temperatures of up to 38º are anticipated over tomorrow and Saturday in the main daylight hours. The public is asked to follow official advice on staying safe in heatwaves, which I've put into English HERE.
