A bit of good news

Myrtle Hogan-Lance

The firefighter who died left a wife and five kids.  Very sad.

The story's made the Guardian and naturally, there's a German involved.  What a fucking idiot, I hope they throw the book at him.

Holy shit! An enormously strong wind just came in from the west about 5 minutes ago and has taken the temperature down from 38.x to 29.1.  That's 9 degrees.  You could see dusty air blowing in from off the ocean.  Normally I can see the Abama from upstairs but not now.  Very strange.

Why naturally? Anyway, he's been imprisoned without bail. Now he gets board and lodging and doesn't have to sleep in a cave. I guess he gets unlimited toilet paper too, and he doesn't have to burn it.

Latest:

At least two fronts of the La Palma fire are now contained, and as ground and air crew continue to bring it under control, the vast majority of people who had to leave their homes have been allowed to go home. The evening heat continues to abate, and although there is an alert tomorrow in La Palma and Tenerife, it's "just" a yellow alert for temperatures to 34ยบ between midday and 6pm. This is passing ...

fraid not ... latest (and though I post most updates here, the fullest and latest is alway on the stream on my website HERE).

While all is looking more encouraging on the two fronts that are under control, the Mazo front which was said yesterday to have intensified is causing a new set of problems, and all efforts are now focused on the El Cabrito area, which is very difficult territory for ground crews. Since the air teams don't operate after dark, the Canarian Government evacuated some 500 residents shortly after midnight as a precautionary measure in Montes de Luna and the upper part of Tigalate.

Meanwhile, the German thought to have started the original blaze was in Court yesterday to give evidence. The Guardia Civil says that he was refused bail and has been remanded in custody while the investigation continues.

As of an hour ago, local politician Juan Arturo San Gil Ayut has set up this live feed from Mazo.
