By popular request of one person, here is a photo taken from just outside our house. Hazy because of the distance. The barranco is to the right, and there is some poor guy climbing up, or down, the arch which they will presumably swing into place after he has fallen off climbed down.

more equipment there than it takes to change a lightbulb.

Even more than we have?   :eyepop: :eyepop: :eyepop:

Of course not - that would be ridiculous.  :cheezy:

They are moving an arch into place. These two are taken about 15 mins apart

The first arch is now in place, making the contact across the barranco.

They're havin' a larf!!

Having watched cars tootling up and down the newly opened extension north of the Barranco de Erques for the past two days, OH and I decided to drive it and see what it was like.  The plan was to get on at the Tejina junction and drive north (to see how long it now takes to get to Santiago del Teide), turn around at the end and drive as far south as we could to see where it ended.

Well, you can't get on the "motorway" to go northward at Tejina because the on ramp is not open.  You can only get on going southward.  So we did.  In about two minutes of driving on a very confusing unfinished "motorway" where the speed limit was 80, it ended.  You can't just turn around and get back on.  You have to go left or right and find a place to turn around.  Unfortunately for us we went right, turned around and came back to the intersection only to find we had to carry on and find someplace to turn around again, then we could get on.

So, the "motorway" has two lanes northbound and one lane southbound.  Said southbound lane has a solid white line delineating it the entire way, so there's no overtaking.  The speed limit varies from 80kph to 70kph.  Some other features:

- no central divider
- no cat's eyes
- no proper road signs
- half the junctions don't seem to be open

I forgot to look and see if there are lights for night-time driving.

What is on the plus side?

- some nice views of Teide
- the tunnel just before Santiago del Teide is beautifully appointed and well lit
- the road is tarred

The opening of this road is nothing more than a cynical political move by somebody.

And a "motorway" with only one lane going southbound is about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

We were singularly underwhelmed.

Nova

Sounds like a fun place to drive up and down!  Shall we take a picnic?  :D  Apparently when the M6 first opened people used to go and have picnics on the hard shoulder watching the traffic... it sounds like we could take our sunloungers too and spread out the width of the road  :great:
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.

I may be wrong Nova but back then I think there was no speed limit on it :eyepop:

I think you're right, P, but then I don't think Morris Minors and Ford Anglias were in danger of breaking the speed of light  :giggle:
