First domestic violence murder of 2013

A 35-year-old woman died shortly after 7am this morning in the Los Gladiolos area of Santa Cruz. She becomes the first victim of domestic violence in the Canaries this year. Witnesses say that despite there being no history of an abusive relationship, her 42-year-old killer and former partner murdered her with a knife in front of their two children in the lift to her apartment. He has already been detained by the Policía Nacional.

Domestic violence is a problem throughout Spain, and the Canaries is well up the list of offending areas. Women are not unprotected by the authorities, however, and there are refuges, and dedicated police units, to help anyone who is in fear of, or an actual victim of, domestic violence.
