Arico Nuevo to El Contador

On Monday, I walked from the lovely village of Arico Nuevo to El Contador, a recreation zone/campsite high in the mountains. The scenery along the way was superb, particularly in the Barranco de Tamadaya, where I saw three great spotted woodpeckers. The walk, which is quite hard, is 23 kilometres in length with around 1300 metres of climbing and took me 8.25 hours to complete. Here is a picture of one of the woodpeckers

What a gorgeous woodpecker.  Looks very similar to the ones we had in the UK.

I was fine for the 8 hours but that .25 was a real killer!  :toothygrin:

According to my new bird book which I got for Xmas, that is the great spotted woodpecker.  Thought so!
