Can't remember if I mentioned a race we did in Alcalá a couple of weeks ago.  It was the first time it was held and had the support of just about every business in town.  It's purpose was to support those families in Guía without an income.  There were multiple races for kids, based on age, whose distance increased with age.  For the adults, men ran 10km and women 5km.  Adults paid 10€ to enter, and the kids' entry fee was 1kg of non-perishable food.  We also took along a food donation since the event was to help people in our area.  Adding ours to the pile really got to me.  We are very fortunate not having to worry about where our next meal is coming from.  It is horrible to think it may be your neighbours who might be hungry.  I will continue to support when I can find an opportunity to do so.  However, I do not think that ad hoc food donation is a sustainable system.

We really need to get out of the eurozone for starters.

poker

Like I sayd few posts ago time for peseta again before its like Argentina in 2002 .

They are holding in to long to utopia in the monetary union .

Or Germany and some other northern countrys have to make a northern euro that is tronger .

Problem is the Germans are gonne loose a lot of clients in the south they had these last 15 years .
But they are not buying anyway ? ? ?

Could be the lower euro still has profits for them then for exports out of the EU .

Anyway we are heading for desaster .
Why did they ever alow nearly all industry from the EU to go to China . . . .

Shortsighted polititians that yust filled their pockets . ( encouridged by industry leaders )

There's a certain other forum having to do with Tenerife I keep tabs on mainly to see if there is something I need to know which I have missed elsewhere.  One of the most fascinating things is the number of threads started by people all over Europe, stating their intentions to move to Tenerife as a single, couple, family with school age kids etc.  They are inevitably very hard workers, willing to take any job, know it won't be easy, but would rather be poor in the sun than poor and miserable in the snow.  99% of the time they speak no Spanish but by gum, they are willing to learn.  I reckon there are 2-3 of these per week.  Time after time I watch the goodhearted faithful of that forum kindly try to tell these people that unless they have thousands of euros to support themselves, they should not come, and their sage advice is rebuffed each and every time.  It is a wonder that some of these people still care enough about humankind to bother telling these people the truth.

When the unemployment figures are as Janet has reported, you have to wonder why people who will never land secure employment here continue to want to flock here.

i know. i had exactly one of those people in the car the other day. originally from hungary, in their early 30ies, coming from the uk where she had worked as a chamber maid and he had been washing pots in a hotel. they had been in the uk for 2 years, now they decided to give tenerife a go. they arrived with 2 suitcases and a dog(!), hoping to find a job asap. her first words were that she knew they had to get an NIE number so first thing they wanted to do is to go to the police station to get legal. taking into account they are staying in a holiday apartment for 2 weeks before moving on into a long let place. of course they only speak some broken english and hungarian, but they are willing to learn and also willing to do any job, ideally as a chamber maid...
i tried to explain to them that times where job offers were there all the time are long gone, but they wouldn't have any of that. bless them, i wished them all the luck in the world.  but still, sometimes it just makes me angry...

also, on said forum, this other person from estonia/latvia or thereabouts, asking how to obtain spanish citizenship in order to get child benefits. her husband would continue to work in finland for the time being... :loopy:
after all this time?... always

I know the thread you are talking about.  My jaw dropped when I read it.

Those people and the Hungarians will add to the numbers, but the chief problem as I understand it is the number of native Canarians with no job, no support, no nothing.  They are the ones who are really hurting.

Janet

I agree with the turtle, it is the Canarians who are hurting the most. If those who are advised not to come still insist on it, my sympathy is almost non-existent.

What do you think of this post a couple of us saw somewhere else?  It reads:

"Moving to Tenerife with a baby. What benefits can I expect?

Welcome. I'd like your help. We are planning to move to Tenerife. I, my partner, and we have a 9 month old baby. The child's father continues to work in Finland. I am ready to look for work in Tenerife. Since I'm on maternity leave Estonia to February in 2014. Should I immediately apply for Spanish citizenship ? What is the Spanish parental leave benefits? Estonia, the benefit is paid 280 euros. Will I need a visa for me and the baby? Applying for Spanish citizenship, which is needed for this? I'd like more advice. help is appreciated "

The post illustrates the sheer insanity of people, moving to an island with no prospects, where a third of the natives and over half the native young people are out of work.  Any research would show that no one could expect any benefits if the natives aren't even given any.

As I mentioned elsewhere, the kind folk of that other forum who are still even interested in replying to such idiocy counselled the OP not to do it.

Janet

I can see troubles coming, though, as more and people are not only out of work, but where no work is to be found, and there's no income for so many people .....

Heard today that Mercadona is setting up tables where you can donate unperishable food.  Am going tomorrow and will look.  I am glad to donate (providing it goes to people in need and not back into the store to be resold) but I still think ad hoc food donation is a bad way to treat our fellow Canarians.
