Is anybody following the new FB page "Tenerife Neighbourhood Watch"?

I heard about the page a little over 48 hours ago so applied to join.  I am astounded to see that the size of the group has nearly doubled to 754 members since then.  Looking at the membership is like reading a "Who's Who" of the Tenerife English-speaking community.

What has really amazed me is the number of crimes and crime spots being pointed out by the members.  They are even filing the reports for easy access so they don't get lost in the news feeds!

To look at this page you would begin to believe we are living in such a hotbed of crime that maybe we should think about barbed wire and concealed semi-automatic weapons.  I was actually nervous in Callao Salvaje last evening, keeping a sharp eye out for all the criminals.

I think the page is a good idea but is bound to scare the bejeezus out of people thinking about visiting the island.

I know what you mean. It was started by a Callao Salvaje victim, in fact: Shane, who is the drag act Mister Sister.

I agree that generating fear is a danger, and I've always tried myself not to post too much information on crime for that reason. I think another danger is that with all the posts about very minor and petty incidents, really important stuff will get lost in the fog.

I hope it works for them, and joined myself, but it is a bit of a concern that despite its first rate motives, it could do more harm than good.

Yes, I know you're on it as I see your posts coming through on my news feed.

I liked the way you and the other woman outed the idiot who was accusing you of racism.  Well done on that one.   :08:

Definitely a good move.  And I bet I know who suggested it to her.

I've just added you. It's pending admin approval because members can't add new members, just suggest them, but I'm sure it'll be approved shortly. If you decide not to stay, you can always leave by editing your group option.  :tiphat:
