Adeje Ayuntamiento has announced that the annual Adeje Feria del Libro (book fair) will take place on the weekend of 21-22 April. Last year, in celebration of the 400 anniversary of Shakespeare's death, the council invited English language authors to participate – and six writers from around the island took turns to be at the fair to meet the public and to present and sell their books.

The council is hoping to extend that somewhat this year, perhaps including authors in other languages: there will be more details no doubt in due course. The fair is a good opportunity for an author to publicise a new work and meet the public, and for readers, of course, it is a date not to be missed.

There was a good turnout for the dedicated English-language writers session this lunchtime, with local authors describing their writing, their works and motivations, and how Tenerife has played a part in inspiring them. Writers discussed their creative and artistic lives before coming to Tenerife, and noted how much harder it was to network and market their works when living abroad. Many clearly see self-publishing as often the best way to proceed for new authors for this reason, as well for purely economic considerations.

Books and writers included Nobody's Poodle from Richard and Nikki Attree, the new thriller Trust Me from Gemma Metcalfe, a range of novels and other writings by Lee Bullen, and the ever popular Ketchup books by Joe Cawley. Author Susan Dehmel was also there, the author of Boris & Friends, a tri-lingual book in English, Spanish and German with all proceeds going to K9, and pages in the book for children to colour in. As for the copies of How to Treat a Woman by Rebecca Stone, they were draped with some very red and flimsy underwear, so there was no doubt that the nature of the book's contents matched its subtitle - What Every Woman Wants Men to Know!

All in all, it was an interesting and entertaining inclusion to Adeje's annual book fair, and one that I hope they repeat in subsequent years. Certainly, with the event being introduced by the Libraries councillor, the Ayuntamiento is practising what it preaches and extending its policy of convivencia (harmonious living) by including English-language authors under its literary umbrella.
