Travel Tenerife, who were named Luxury Travel Guide's Tenerife Tour Operator of the year last November, are creating an Astronomy and Science Centre in south Tenerife. The centre will be in the old reception building of Island Village and the team is hoping to have the first stage of the project open in by May. At this point they are in the process of gathering sponsors and investors.

Travel Tenerife says that their main aim at the moment is to open the upper floor which will house the biggest telescope openly available to the public in Europe. The company says it will be "a visitors attraction and we hope to bring astronomers and enthusiasts alike as well as students and the general public to use and experience the equipment we will provide".

It all sounds like a great venture for south Tenerife, and Travel Tenerife have shown they can make good things happen very successfully. For those who would like more information, there is a dedicated website HERE, and the brochure can be viewed HERE. (live links on my website HERE)

It sounds really interesting. I think they have to polish up their links and website to be less vague. And I must question the idea of having a large telescope (of undefined description) on the coast in an area of high light pollution when vastly improved viewing conditions would be achieved just a few miles away. I think they need to be clearer on that.

That's what I was thinking...far too much light pollution.

I'll never forget the night sky in Kenya. Stars behind stars behind stars!  Beautiful and awesome.

You should try Namibia.  The stars are right on top of you; a sight to treasure forever.
