Santander's 123 account is now open to non-residents as well.  If you have a monthly recurring payment of €600 or more into your account, have at least three direct debits set up and use your debit card six times a quarter, the account costs €3 a month and the debit card, transfers etc. are free.  The account pays interest on balances over €1,000 and cashback on direct debits, taxes etc.

Just FYI  :tiphat:

Recommendation:  put an account like that into the rant thread.  You will feel a lot better after you get to use a lot of  :banghead: and  :gonnagetit: and especially  :violent-smiley-007: :gun09: and :gun07:

Thanks for the idea Myrtle, however I'm so chilled out after two weeks the entire post was more of an 'observation' and update for interested parties than a rant.

I find any observation remotely connected with an effing bank in Tenerife needs to go into the rant thread. I mean, what other reaction can there be? :33:

We went to the branch to collect our new ATM / debit cards on Monday 20th and after waiting in the queue of 3 customers for about 10 minutes finally reached the counter. I asked for our 'new cards' (In Spanish just to make an effort, since I don't actually speak Spanish) and they were promptly obtained form the cupboard behind the counter, registered / activated and we left the bank with new cards in our hands.

The process was efficient and pain free and on attempting to use the cards we found that they actually worked.

Well done BM, much better than the experience on our previous visit.

A heads-up for anyone who has a Santander 1-2-3 account, the conditions have changed.  In order to continue to receive the benefits of the 1-2-3 account, at least one of the 6 card transactions per quarter must be with a credit card.  Failure to comply will mean losing all benefits of the account including the interest and cashback on direct debits as well as being charged the higher monthly maintenance charge (€8 plus €3 for the debit card).

Additionally, there will be a further €3 charge per month for the debit card + credit card + a second credit card that you can't pay off all in one go, increasing the total monthly charges to €6.

The overall effect is that the 123 account now requires a compulsory credit card and costs €6 per month instead of €3.  If anybody here has one of these accounts and didn't know about these changes, I suggest you get down to your branch ASAP  :tiphat:
