Uproar over transport of drugged and tied camels from Lanzarote for Reyes parades in Tenerife

Social networks and the Canarian press are up in arms today over the transport of camels from Lanzarote to Tenerife to take part in Reyes parades on Monday. Santa Cruz  local police, indeed, have opened an investigatory file into the incident, something they seem to have had little choice over since photos and videos were taken and released by passengers themselves who witnessed the transport on their Armas ferries of a lorry stuffed with camels who, it now transpires, were additionally drugged and tied for the journey, unable not just to move, but even to stand up.

Some vets have said that this is, in fact, sometimes a safer way to transport animals because they are unable to injure themselves or others, but other sources say that the journey - 18 hours in all including a stop in Gran Canaria - violates EU rules on how long animals can be transported for without breaks for exercise, and to be fed and watered. Whatever the final outcome, few will disagree that in any case this is yet another example of appalling indifference to animal welfare so often exhibited in these islands. JA
