Well I would have persevered as once you get it, you're good for 2 1/2 years of generating documents before you have to jump through more hoops for a new certificate.

However, there seem to be some 'things' you need to do re Internet Explorer 8.x, and having looked at the instructions, I simply couldn't be bothered.  Perhaps some geeky person who likes a challenge will try it one day.....

That sounds like the same digital certificate I didn't have for my modelo 720.  Apparently they give you that as well when you get your certificado de viajes from the ayuntamiento - or at least that's how my colleague got hers.  I'm trying it on Thursday morning when I go to get my empadronamiento just in case I need it for Trafico  :tiphat:
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.

I have just tried to get my digital certificate and failed.  First, Firefox does not like the site www.cert.fmnt.es and refused to go further than about step 3.  So I tried Internet Explorer, and it does allow you to enter a NIE, but it simply came back and said it could not generate my private key.  It gave the option to try it again, which I did, and it failed.  So no go.

FYI if you manage to generate a key, you then have 10 days to show up in person at your Ayuntamiento where they will wave a magic wand, then you can go home to your computer to complete the steps and generate your empadronamiento para viajar.

Pffffft.
We went through this process.
Got the keys, went to Ayuntamiento, got home, insrted the key
It works on one laptop, but not the other!!
At least - it did work until the security proceesses deleted the certificate!!!
Only the Spanish could come up with such a stupid system.

Yes Andy I believe it.  The instructions say you have to use it on the same computer you requested it from.  So I am not surprised the certificate was deleted.  I agree, it's a pretty dumb system.  There is no reason, for example, for it to only be valid for 2 1/2 years.  Maybe somebody's nephew who always wanted to get into IT but couldn't be bothered to get any training designed the system.

As I posted in January, travel firms had until November to be fully integrated into the automated SARA system for resident discounts. Throughout this year, technically, travellers no longer had to provide travel empadronamientos (Certificado de Empadronamiento para Viajar) but were advised to get one in case their travel agent or carrier was not yet part of SARA. Well, November it nearly is, and from this Saturday, travellers will find the process completed automatically and will no longer be asked for the travel empadronamiento - indeed, they cannot be asked for it.

As I said below, to be clear, this just means that travellers don't have to produce a certificate any more. They still have to be "on the padron" so that the automatic system will be able to confirm they are registered with their council. The expected confirmation that all travel agents, shipping companies, airlines, etc., must use the SARA system from Saturday was given today by the Ministerio de Fomento. The government said that travel empadronamientos will still have to be produced for children under 14 and for anyone who has only very recently registered with their council.  JA

Two comments:

1)  It does not matter if you are on the padrón if they have your name wrong.  You will not pass the look up function.  We failed it last month for a trip in November.  Still do not know how our names are represented on the database.  We fixed it by going into the Armas office.

2)  Booked a flight to Madrid for next week today.  Website gave me the Canarian resident discount contingent upon my presenting my physical Certificado de Viaje (duly printed via Guía's Sede Electrónica).  No attempt to look me up in the database.

I do not think anything is fully integrated by any stretch of the imagination.

For crying out loud - why can't they do a search on, say, NIE?

This is why they say travellers must check that their details are correct on the padron or the autosystem will indeed not confirm them. The law - national not Canarian - says they must be integrated by Saturday at the latest. Beyond that, it is a case of complaints book ...
