Puerto de la Cruz mayor Marcos Brito dies

Marcos Brito, mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, has died this morning, police have announced. Mayor Brito's body was found around 9.30am in his home in the town, apparently having suffered a heart attack during the night – he had recently been in hospital with respiratory problems. Brito, now 75 and originally from El Hierro, was a member of the nationalist party, Coalición Canaria, and had been mayor of Puerto de la Cruz at different times since 1995. Tenerife president Carlos Alonso expressed his deep sadness, and said that the heart that had beaten for the people of Puerto de la Cruz had today failed Brito himself. JA
