Domestic violence: Tenerife cabildo helps over 2,000 women and children in first half of 2014

The Tenerife cabildo says that it attended to more than 2,240 victims of domestic violence (2,017 women and 229 children) through the first half of 2014. Councillor for the Instituto de Atención Social y Sociosanitaria (IASS), Miguel Ángel Pérez, underlined the quality of the work the cabildo does in this field through the Servicio Insular de Atención a la Mujer (SIAM). SIAM has eight offices in Tenerife, in Adeje, San Miguel, Candelaria, Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Santa Úrsula, La Orotava and Los Silos.

Statistics show that 86% of those who attend are Spanish nationals, and 60% are unemployed The high percentage of "Spanish" is partly a function of the island's demographics, but also partly lack of knowledge among immigrants of the services available. These services are provided within the framework of agreements between the Instituto de Atención Social y Sociosanitario (IASS), the Cabildo itself, and the Canarian Government's Instituto Canario de Igualdad, with resources which together form a network of services and public specialist attention centres for victims of domestic violence. These allow the provision of care (on all levels, including practical, medical, emotional, psychological), information, advice and comprehensive intervention when necessary.
