A half-kilometre oil slick that appeared yesterday in Gran Canaria at the El Cabrón beach in Agüimes has reignited fury over oil prospecting off the eastern islands. Campaigners say that this slick, which saw the Canarian president himself make an inspection this morning, shows the damage such oil can cause to these islands and their beaches – and so their tourism. Others are saying, however, that exploration has not yet started and that this, again, looks like being the result of a tanker cleaning out while at sea, and that it doesn't take oil rigs to cause such problems. The argument will rage, of course, with both sides holding entrenched views, but meanwhile, the clean-up starts in Gran Canaria. JA

Sadly, a fairly reasonable perspective of the clean-up in Gran Canaria ...

Tankers being cleaned out at sea - surely that must be illegal?
