The Tenerife Cabildo has announced the opening tomorrow of Gastro Canarias 2014, the first ever such gastronomic fair here. It will be held in the Recinto Ferial on 21, 22 and 23 May with its official opening at 10am.

The fair is divided into two sections: the exhibition area with 50 exclusive stands and several areas of parallel and complementary activities. But one of the highlights is the tenth edition of the Canary Islands Top Chef Regional Championship, where chefs from 10 different islands will compete for the title. There will also be other contests with different themes such as "Canary Gourmet Sandwiches", " Ham Cutters ", " Classical Canary Cocktails" and " Acrobatic Mixology ". Other activities include the Chef Fashion Catwalk, in collaboration with Tenerife Fashion and Tenerife Island Wines, where the public can sample a variety of local wines.

And, of course, there's the "Gourmet Experience" where nine major Canarian chefs will prepare three lunches, each with a different tasting menu in an event coordinated by the Association of Chefs and Confectioners of the Canary Islands (ACYRE Canarias). The fair's objective is the promotion of Canarian gastronomy and is sponsored and organized jointly by the Tenerife Cabildo, through the Trade Fair Centre of Tenerife and the Canary Islands company Interideas , promoter of the GastroCanarias communication platform. The opening will be attended by the President of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso; the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez; the director of the Canary Islands Institute of Food Quality (ICCA), Alfonso López; plus sponsors and partners. Also attending the Gourmet Experience lunch will be three Russian journalists from major media in Moscow who are currently on the island on an official press trip organized by Tenerife Tourism.
