Does anybody have a restaurant recommendation in Santa Cruz someplace near the harbour?  Something Canarian?

La Hierbita.
Walk up Calle Castillo - turn left opposite El Kilo - I think it's in the second side street, easy to find . . . or everyone knows where it is. Very Canarian. Gives Canarian cooking a good name.  :tiphat:

El Prof is right on the money, many many thanks.  We took our friends who have been stuffing their faces on a cruise ship for the past week and they absolutely loved it.  So did we.

We had some fried sardines (local) which were delicious, jamon, berenjenas a la miel - basically deep fried aubergine with honey, mmmm mmmmm and a few other dishes washed down by a Canarian white.  The service was perfect too.  A good time was had by all.

If you are in a position to take up Prof's advice, I highly recommend you do so.

Would have loved to have helped you Myrtle but to be honest we don't really go to Santa Cruz for meals and on the odd occasion we have I wouldn't have recommended them to anyone. But glad Prof directed you to a good one.

So glad you liked that . . . one of my faves, not that I go out much. I liked the atmosphere too, converted house, lots of wood. And ever so Canarian.
Mr Pelinor, I would love to hear one from you for future reference . . . you have some local contacts on the ground I think.

Well I can tell you one straight away not to go to. Its more of a cafe that does meals than a restaurant. Its just up 20 or so meters from El Kilo on the opposite side of the street and relatively new. We stopped there for a quick snack one afternoon. I had a burger. I was trying to shake the ketchup bottle when the damn thing exploded and covered me in rank smelly rotten sauce!! which had no doubt been in the bottle and the sun for a long time!! My pants and shirt were covered in it! Not amused especially when all the staff did was laugh! Even the wife was gob smacked, we just got up and walked away without paying and left everything on the table.

With that said there are a few we have been to in the past and whilst not exactly Canarian they were OK. Next time we go to town I'll get their names and what street there on.
