Arona Ayuntamiento has announced that it is starting the procedure to declare the derelict and squatter-filled  so-called Casa del Peña – the "House of the Rock" - on the bay in Los Cristianos a "ruin". The council's Urbanism department will then evict any occupants for safety reasons and cordon the property off. The house has become notorious as both an eyesore and the domain of squatters, some considered drug users, and others dangerous - it was the home, for example, of Deyan Deyanov, who committed probably the most horrendous crime Los Cristianos has ever seen when he killed Jennifer Mills-Westley. The move has been made at the joint instigation of Arona Policía Local and the council's own Environment department. Arona's Planning department head Carmelo García said that the property's owner will be notified, as will the department of Costas since the building occupies public coastal territory. I would say that this means the building has its days very clearly numbered. JA

Has it not been cordoned off once already? Depending on the definition of 'cordoned off' of course.

yes, it's a question of definitions. That was a single police tape. This is a formal, council & Costas DO NOT ENTER ...

what it means is that it initiates a procedure for demolition, AND allows the police greater authority to evict, because it will involve the Guardia, not just the local plods.

I'm sure I can remember people living in it (not squatters) that would be in the early 70's. The wife seems positive they were German?  But I wouldn't put to much stock into this news. There is a massive 15 (?) story hotel block on the sea shore at Añaza thats been under demolition for the past 40 odd years and not a brick has been moved! It would seem to some that they can only knock down buildings that people live in Spain

Seem to remember that place half on the beach in Las Galletas being knocked down quite quickly, was it the Atlantida?. Is it quicker if the department of Costas are involved maybe?

Maybe NAH but I think the deciding factor is, who is going to pay for the demolition. Both the hotel I mentioned and this house are on land belonging to the Dept of Costas. I suspect that the house will be knocked down as there are 'Plan's' for it
