Adeje Ayuntamiento has approved a bylaw banning the hanging out of clothes to dry, and barbecues, on terraces and balconies in the municipality. The vote was not passed unanimously, and the governing group had to vote it through in the face of strong criticisms from opposition parties. There was particular complaint about the banning of clothes lines and racks given that this will clearly disadvantage residents of the borough, who could now be fined for breaching the local law. The reason given for the bylaw is an aesthetic one, with the council reporting many complaints on the matter. Two posts in one night about new reasons for fines ... JA

This is totally ridiculous. There has always been a ban on clothes drying on balconies and terraces on devices higher than 100cms (I think) which is why English people are surprised when people get cross about huge clothes spinners they immediately set up when they move onto a complex, or the clothes lines set high on a wall. But the photo in the link in the link shows a clothes stand of 'normal' height. That looks to me to be the only place that you could dry clothes in that apartment. Where else, if you don't have a garage?

A tumble dryer seems the only option, or go to a laundry. This is all about one part of the casco ... but they need to apply the law municipally to avoid accusations of discrimination. The politicians don't want clean (let alone dirty!!) washing on show when they have bigwigs in the official buildings, or when the town is on television as in the Pasión.

And then of course there'll be the money from fines ....

Trouble with drying inside is that damp clothes inside can damage things such as paintwork, books and anything else that shouldn't get damp.  I warped some of my favourite record sleeves by hanging my wet laundry in the same room  :03:
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.

Another problem is where to put them.  They take up a lot of space.

One of the attractions of Tenerife is the warm dry air. It's absurd to expect people in small apartments to be forced to keep washing indoors.  :33:

A previous thead on the forum drew attention to the health risk of drying clothes indoors. BBC I wonder whether those affected could challenge this new law. If I were affected, I would make sure I had a life-size photo of a clothes drier on my balcony.  :giggle:

Oh good grief.  Whatever will they come up with next?
