Does anyone know a good, decent and honest butcher in south Tenerife?

We feel like you Janet. From now on we're going to use our local farm shop.

I don't even think it's any more expensive as they do special offer 'bundles'.

Sounds like a good idea but!! We have loads in Kent, and Fresh Fish supplies (I am on the coast). Have seen wholesale meat suppliers delivering to the "Farm Shops" and Frozen Fish suppliers going to the local Fish merchants. So give up Michael, and just do what you've always done. And whatever you have eaten hasn't harmed you.

exactly ... but the only place to do that near me is in a butcher. I used to be able to do it in Mercadona Adeje, but they stopped the meat counter.

Thing is, though, how do I know the steaks I'm looking at are cow not horse?? 

Easy you can spot horse if it's hanging in the chiller and ask for it but most of our butchers don't do horse
You would be best to get some of the cheaper cuts minced rather than steak and stock up on three or four kilos with 10% pork

I think you are finding that out in the UK at the moment...
