I cannot even make the example, 12345678/23 work.

Is it cuz I is wine?

That may be part of the problem  :giggle:

Now listen carefully. Pile 12345678 matchsticks onto the table. This works not only with matchsticks, but also floor tiles, eggs, toothpicks or wine bottle corks, so feel free to select whatever is at hand. Your choice. Whatever you choose, I'll call them UNITS. If you choose the housebrick or 9-inch block option, clear all the junk and any lurking engineers out of the garage, because you'll need the space. Better still, hire the sportsground across the road for a week. Perhaps a year. Do not choose a unit which moves, such as mice, lizards or Staffies: that way insanity lies.

Now see how many groups of 23 units you can construct from your stash of 12,345,678. If you do this correctly, you will find that you can build 536,768 piles of 23 units, using a total of 12,345,664 units. But you will have 14 left over, assuming none have been stolen in the meantime. Now refer to the table in the link, and you will see that 14 equates to Z.

As an exercise for the student, what letter did General Franco have?

Nova

Wasn't Franco's something like 00000000A?  Even though that wouldn't fit the pattern. Something like that though.

It's a good job you explained using the word "remainder" and not "modulus"  :giggle:

Edit: 00000001T??
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.

:P That is because I meant "remainder" and not "modulus".

Finally, I managed it.  I did not get that I had to turn my leading character into a digit.

Here I thought I might be the exception that proved the rule...

Um - if the explanation in post #10 is no good, then I don't know what else to say. Make one up, similar to your own, and I'll give it another try.
