There is great excitement every May when the European Environmental Education Foundation (ADEAC) makes its awards for blue flag beaches. In 2015, Tenerife had thirteen blue flags, down two from 2013 because of the Arona situation. And this year, it has them back. Arona is understandably ecstatic that Los Cristianos beach and Playa de las Vistas will again see two blue flags flying, two of the fifteen that Tenerife was awarded for 2016, back up to normal standard again!

Tenerife's blue flag beaches this year are El Médano and la Jaquita in Granadilla; Troya I & II, Torviscas, Fañabé, and El Duque in Adeje; Las Vistas and Los Cristianos in Arona, the Piscinas de Bajamar in La Laguna; El Socorro in Los Realejos; San Telmo and Complejo Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz; Playa San Juan in Guía de Isora; La Arena-Mesa del Mar in Tacoronte ... and for the 29th year running, Playa La Arena in Santiago del Teide. There are also blue flags for the sports ports of Los Gigantes and the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife. Well done to them all!

Good news for the south  :great:

But the Santa Cruz beach, Las Teresitas . . . which is about a million miles from Santa Cruz . . .  is now in it's 13th year without the blue flag.

I don't think of the blue flag so much as an award, but rather a minimum requirement for any beach you don't have to hike to. In this case it was refused for sewage spills, rubbish all over the place, lack of lifeguards, lack of coordination between the Red Cross and the local police (a thieves paradise by all accounts), bad accessibility, and lack of services like showers and changing rooms.

Well done Santa Cruz

I don't get Playa san Juan.  :017:

I mean it's nice enough but very stony and a bollix to get out of the water because of the rocks you have to stumble over.

Those rubber sea shoes help with that.  It takes some getting used to swimming in them but they transform getting in and out of the water wherever there are rocks.
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.
