The helicopter was flying northbound from the Vera de Erques area over the Mta de Tejina around 11.00. About 20 minutes later, a bright yellow plane was flying northbound hugging the west coastline. Coincidence?
Count your Germans to see if one is missing.

We've had helicopters circling overhead ever since my first post today. And we are pretty far inland, as it goes, so I am confused since they are supposed to be looking in the sea.
Helicopter or plane overhead right now. Given we're in and out of mist every few minutes there must be something serious on the go.

Exactly.
Thermal imaging?
The yellow helicopter is flying slowly behind the Montaña de Tejina. Count your Germans, look out for smoke.
just up here this very minute ... and Jeremy said "someone's lost" and I said "or there's a fire" ...

It's still flying around.
One of the yellow helicopters has just gone overhead, on a heading roughly from the Los Gigantes area over Tejina and Vera at any minute. Something's up.

Good try, but optional - when writing a letter to someone, even to those with whom you would use the familiar form, personal adjectives and pronouns usually had capital letters as a sign of respect. See attachment gleaned from the internet.
I use a past tense of course because these days nobody gives a flying fuck about such niceties. :angryoldman:

I don't believe they did while I was learning German.
No, having just checked my remaining textbook, they did not. It is from around the time Gutenberg invented the printing press.

You would not expect that in a textbook, unless it is an actual written letter. If there are sentences which are just dialogue, there would be no capitals. Here is an extract from a loveletter to Hölderlin, written about 1800:
QuoteIch muß Dir schreiben Lieber! Mein Herz hält das Schweigen gegen Dich länger nicht aus, nur noch einmal laß meine Empfindung sprechen vor Dir, dann will ich, wenn Du es besser findest, gerne, gerne, still sein.
Wie ist nun, seit Du fort bist, um und in mir alles so öde und leer, es ist als hätte mein Leben alle Bedeutung verloren, nur im Schmerz fühl ich es noch.
although the orthography might have been changed. Attached is another original letter which looks about 200 years old, in which the capital letters are clearly visible in lines 1,5, 6 and 7.
[attachimg=1]
Thank you @Penkles (http://chalkcat.com/index.php?action=profile;u=6). I found I had another old textbook as well as my dictionary, none of which address letter writing. I guess that is no bad thing, given I have managed to avoid writing a letter in German in the intervening time. Should the occasion occur, I will be straight on to you.

By all means. The probability of your needing to write in German, using the familiar form (which they use with restraint), must be around zero. But I live in hope. ;)

There was a military helicopter flying southbound from the Masca barranco earlier. The yellow one has just come from the Masca barranco overhead in Puerto Santiago. Somebody may have been rescued.
At least one helicopter is up. The yellow gobierno one just flew past Puerto Santiago and Los Gigantes, then hugged the cliffs as it flew toward Teno.
Count your Germans folks.
is that right now, @Myrtle Hogan-Lance (https://chalkcat.com/index.php?action=profile;u=20) or could it have been a quarter of an hour ago?? If so, there was a GES helicopter doing a rescue at Masca right then ... someone with health problems, transferred to the beach, bomberos involved too. No other details but clearly nothing "serious".
Could it have been that one?
edit: this released in the last few minutes of the helicopter landing at the beach ... click to expand

It was up and went by, then I posted. I watched to see if it flew up the barranco to Masca, but it continued low over the coast. However, it is unlikely to have been a different helicopter and I did not hear another. Perhaps it did go to the beach.
Just seen it again, on the way home, flying from Santiago del Teide area across the TF1 towards Adeje ... and as soon as I'm back to my computer I see that it has just rescued a 70-year-old walker who hurt her leg while hiking down Masca barranco.

Sorry for the late arrival to report what I could see. It came about half an hour ago and it looked to have landed by the lido. It was not the yellow or yellow and blue gobierno copter. It kept the blades running. About 15 minutes or so ago, it rose, and hovered over the harbour at Los Gigantes. It stayed low and in the same place for about 10 minutes. Now it has left but I can still hear it.
I suspect it is not a rescue. Could it be they are filming something?
or a tourist flight?
I can hear it now. Is that possible?? It's definitely either a helicopter or a lawnmower :giggle: I can't see it, I think the buildings are in the way. It sounds like it's over in the Los Cristianos direction...
No, it's a lawnmower! :giggle: Not really, it's a little yellow maintenance vehicle with an flashing amber light on top. I can't see what it's doing but it seems to only move a few inches each time then stop again, and it's making a hell of a noise!!!
just posting this now ...
A Coastguard helicopter rescued a man from the sea today after he fell into the water behind the Hotel Los Gigantes. The rescued man was collected from the rocks and taken to the Adeje helipad. There'll be further information in due course, I'm sure.

Yes it did, on its way to Teno this time.
Three cheers for our MMM reporting team.
The waves are breaking over the pool where the people died a few weeks back just like then. The sea is rough.
There seem to have been two incidents. Just posting the second one now.
Man dies after being swept into sea by wave at Puerto Santiago
A man died around 6.30 this evening after being swept into the sea by a wave at Puerto Santiago. Emergency services say that they dispatched a GES search and rescue helicopter after receiving reports of the accident, and after the victim was winched up to the helicopter he was found to be in cardiac arrest. He was flown to Puerto Santiago football field where resuscitation attempts were continued by paramedics and medical staff from the local health centre but sadly without effect.
You know what, it is seriously rough out there. The red flags have been out for several days. I have seen lifeguards remonstrating with people as only they can. WTF possesses people?
RIP the man who died, sorry it happened to you.
Hell, the seas must be rough up there today! Poor man.
The weather was forecast, along with pleas for people to stay away from the coast. It is incomprehensible to me.
One injured and one life lost within a few yards of each other. What a waste.
I've watched the rock pool at LG loads of times and it seems to be considered fun to sit on the wall on the sea side and let the incoming waves knock you off.
Apart from the two incidents yesterday in Puerto Santiago and Los Gigantes, another search is now into its third day for an angler who fell into the sea the day before yesterday off the Los Realejos coast.

well you do have to question their sanity / decision making etc. Down stupidity springs to mind
You really have to wonder. The sea is rough and loud and the waves are breaking as high as I have ever seen them.
I went for a run this morning. One stairway was cordoned off by police tape; the rest of the normal places people access the sea were not. There was a guy in a swimming costume at the Playa Chica and I assume he was intending to go in the water despite the red flag. The waves at Playa Chica were absolutely huge. There was tape across the beach at Playa la Arena, but they do that most every morning while they clean the beach. I was surprised to see no one in the water there as there are at least three red flags, normally a guarantee some idiots will be out there.
People really should respect the sea but clearly a lot don't.

This is part of my (not very serious) argument that learning to swim can be dangerous. Somebody who knows they can't swim will avoid the danger. Knowing how to swim does not increase your intelligence.
All of these latest incidents, though, were people being swept off rocks. They weren't trying to swim, mostly they were trying to fish. Why can they not see that the waves are likely to wash them off the rocks when they sit there and set up their rods?
As fishermen you would think they would be aware of the sea conditions and what it can do and act appropriately.
The one who died in Puerto Santiago yesterday, though, was a 30-year-old British man who seems to have been walking along the coastal area rocks.
My rule of thumb is 'if it's wet, don't bloody walk on it'. ::)
It's not even just the risk of being swept away - have you seen the size of the bloody great rocks the sea throws out when it's like that? If one of those hit you on the head it could kill you!
and now the Mail has it ...
actually I'm glad about this sort of publicity. People seem incapable of learning without sensationalism.

they'd have to decide that she fell because she was unprepared or trying to do it in flipflops ... something along those lines.
Nprobably cheaper to get a rescue. It's €750 over Los Gigantes I think. Though the rescue might be a much shorter trip if they just take you to the playing fields.
Quotea rescue involving up to 4 victims will have a ceiling of €6,000. In very rare cases where larger groups are involved the ceiling will be set at €8,000 for 5-8 needing rescue, €10,000 for 9-16, and €12,000 for 16+. The law also allows got the charges to be levied against the estate of anyone who dies during their rescue, a measure which the regional Goverment insists complies with the provisions of national fiscal legislation.

I suspect it has far more to do with something wrong with their mentality. Any normal person would lounge around swimming pools displaying a disgusting amount of excess fat, shouting at people and drinking heavily, and generally behaving like a five-star slob. But lots of Germans have the perverse notion that getting off their arses and doing something constructive might be a better way of spending their time. I don't have figures, but if 99% of people who go hiking are German, it's hardly surprising that 99% of accidents involve them.
Another factor might be the extremely low standard of walking routes here in Tenerife. Whereas German hiking trails are extremely well laid out and generally well kept, the ones here are appallingly bad, so regular hikers are not used to dangerous hazards such as pebbles and other obstacles which require you to look where you put your feet.

The lengths some people will go to just to get a ride in a helicopter. Don't they know you can book a sight seeing tour by helicopter now? :D
Seriously though, I hope they're OK.
So glad it wasn't a 65-year-old Israeli woman. That could've been my friend but I believe she's not on the island now.
The red and white one is presently cruising low around Los Gigantes and the cliffs.
Place your bets:
- age
- nationality
- ailment

65
German (female)
Lower leg injury
68 Germanwoman and even more specifically ankle.
25, Swedish, heatstroke.
Only kidding :giggle:
Heatstroke is certainly a possibility. Is withered between ankle and heatstroke.
The yellow helicopter has just flown overhead from the Masca direction to the hospital direction.
I'm going female, German, 58, ankle.

They're looking for those "Experts fearing" that Teide's gonna blow
no, they're rescuing anyone on Masca beach from when the tsunami hits after La Palma blows ...
It's flying low all over the Puerto Santiago/Los Gigantes area.
My moneys on a 68 year old German male this time. :great:
The rescue helicopter which brought back the German man's body yesterday has just flown overhead toward the Masca barranco. Let's hope we do not have a repeat.
They yellow rescue copter went over twice this morning; I understand from having spoken to Janet they did rescue two from the Masca barranco, which I figured from watching it and the timing. I am going German, a man and a woman. (She had no details when we spoke.)
In the past hour the yellow copter has flown from the Masca barranco toward the hospital and just went past again on its way back to the Masca barranco. This time I am going for Dutch, two women in their 50s.
At least one head injury, a leg and an arm are my predictions.
I was gonna re-name that helicopter 'The Masca Express' but I think there already is one.
Blimey, they sure get a lot of accidents there.
The yellow helicopter has just left the Masca barranco heading in a southeasterly - a/k/a hospital - direction.
I'm getting a male walker over 50.

isn't that what you always guess ?? :giggle:
No, sometimes I go for females in their 60s. All depends on the vibe of the day!

German of course? :D
and so, these last few rescues ...
- man (nationality not given) with torn knee ligament,
- woman (again no nationality) with head injury from a fall
- German woman with lower leg injury
:tiphat:
Masca Express just gone over heading in that direction.
I'm definitely going for German this time. There was a lot of them at the viewing point this afternoon. :great:
In case anyone heard it today, just after 1pm a 40-year-old German man was rescued from Masca with lower leg injuries ... taken to Hospital del Norte where his condition is said to be comfortable. :tiphat:
And again ...
helicopter rescue for a 75-year-old walker (not clear which nationality) who fell and received slight head injuries.
That was Masca by the way. (My computer works)
The yellow helicopter came low over the Balcón 20 minutes ago. It spent some time near Los Gigantes, near the harbour from the sound. It then headed toward Teno. Given the bands of rain, visibility is only a few hundred metres, so I can't imagine they are out for a jolly or training. Time will tell.

I'm surprised they're flying at all. ::)
flying round in circles at the moment between Mt Tejina and Tijoco Alto ... seems to be focusing on the upper reaches of the barranco de Erques ...
I was going to recommend the Masca Barranco to my German neighbours at La Pinta but I thought the helicopter crew deserved a day off.
I was going to come on to complain about the rescue helicopter buzzing over the Balcón this morning and interrupting my sleep. I was hoping there was an elderly German with multiple injuries. Now I see on Janet's site that it was the rescuers helping some fool who entered the closed Masca barranco and the rescuers had ended up spending the night with him as they couldn't safely get him out last night. I hope they slap him with the bill. Idiot.
Janet's article (https://www.janetanscombe.com/news/emergency-services-stay-overnight-in-masca-barranco-with-walker-who-needed-rescuing.html)
Don't get excited; I just thought I would post how noticeable it is that since they closed the barranco, we don't see the rescue helicopters at least three times a week. In fact, we no longer see them at all. It makes you realise how many accidents there used to be. They did the right thing in closing it to make it safer.

I always thought of it as the Masca Express. ::)
You've jinxed it! Somebody on Facebook has just reported it flying overhead going south and a Fire engine going south too. We heard the helicopter earlier.
