German becoming more popular than English in Spain

Or at least the demand to learn it is, according to this. People are beginning to believe that job prospects improve if you can speak German.

Janet

The job adverts I look through while searching for those I might post on my website often ask for German ... and Italian too ... and for some reason, Portuguese. They all, though, want English at "native level" as a priority. Maybe it's the case now that English is just assumed, and German is the add on.

edit: coincidentally, I've just come across THIS, which shows the importance given to English, at least in the Canaries.

Could it be that German's increased popularity is due to people thinking about or planning to leave Spain for the economically healthier Germany?

:hmmmmm:

I would expect it to be pretty much as Janet says.  In the current climate where jobs are near impossible to come by, a Spanish person who speaks English needs to speak at least another language to stand out from the crowd and German is the obvious choice.
If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know amazing.

El Profesor

I have noticed a renewed enthusiasm for studying languages at all levels and friends in the secondary schools have noticed unusual levels of diligence and hunger to learn that would have been unimaginable 5 years ago in their hoards of digital morons.

Have had long chats with French and German teacher colleagues about how much easier their work is because all the students are at least on their second language.

I've sat through a few months of Russian lessons where every single student, except me, already knew 3, 4 or in one case 6 languages.

Nobody would learn any of these languages if they couldn't speak English.

I therefore agree with every post in this thread ..... but not the title.

I agree the title is misleading. A consequence of not having a keyboard.
